The ELRPS Display Stand
The Society has a display stand that tours a variety of railway and model railway events around the North West of England in order to raise awareness of the ELR and the Society. The stand is maned and maintained by a small group of dedicated volunteers.
The stand has the full set of display boards (12ft) on which the photographs are changed on a regular basis. It also includes the table on which information leaflets are available to hand out to the public.
On this table sits a 42” television screen showing up to date films about the railway and in front of this is the Society headboard and to finish off the stand there is a ‘pop-up’ advertising the railway in general.
There is a very small but dedicated team that takes this whole ensemble to shows when invited and they are always open to other members joining them. Such shows are the Prestwich Clough Family day in May every year which attracts upwards of 4,000 people in the day.
The model railway shows, the stand attends on a regular basis at Hazel Grove in Stockport in October, followed by the Blackburn show at Darwen in November.
In the past couple of years the stand has been displayed at the Manchester Airport weekend and the Oldham Model Engineers show. In December the stand is at the Manchester Model Railway Society show in Manchester.
It is during these shows that the team get to talk to the general public and in some cases the Mayor of the Borough they are displaying in.
Whilst the team enjoy the satisfaction of going out and meeting the public with the stand, they never know how much income it generates for the railway, they do know however that it brings in new members, but again an unknown quantity.
Perhaps you may like to consider a day out with the team and at the same time help to get the railway out into the public domain.
Contact the Company Secretary and Display Stand Manager John Tate who will be happy to discuss this further with you over a cup of tea.
