Bury Transport Museum

The industrial heritage of the North West is brought to life before your very eyes at Bury Transport Museum. Through stunningly restored vehicles, original artefacts and interactive exhibits, visitors are encouraged to explore the lives and jobs of people in the early 20th Century.

The Museum thrives on the support of volunteers in a number of roles:

Front of House / Welcome Host

Be the face of the museum, welcoming visitors on arrival, answering questions and processing shop sales. Front of House volunteers work in groups of three, so it is a fantastic way to meet like-minded people, and socialise while making a valuable contribution to the running of the museum.

Additional duties may include:

  • Dusting and maintaining the museum’s appearance

  • Answering telephone calls and dealing with enquiries

  • Taking provisional group bookings

  • Supporting safety and security for all visitors to the museum

  • Operating (and closing) the till

  • Operating the Museum’s model railway

Throughout the year, the East Lancashire Railway hosts a number of events (incl. Days Out with Thomas©, Halloween Spooktacular and Santa Specials). These events require additional support to process enquiries, help out in the café and assist the smooth running of the event.

Education Volunteer

Bury Transport Museum is home to a popular programme of educational sessions for schools, exploring Victorians, evacuees, wheels and local history. Education volunteers support the delivery of these sessions, leading tours, talks and craft activities. Many of our Education Volunteers have previous experience in schools, but this is not necessary, all we ask for are friendly volunteers who have an interest and enjoyment supporting young people’s learning.

Time commitments

As a volunteer it is your decision how much or how little time you volunteer.  Events and Education Volunteers are able to support bookings and events as they arise, and will be notified by the Museum and Education Manager in advance.

There is a rota in place for our Front of House/ Welcome Hosts to sign up for shifts throughout the week, these are split into mornings (9:45 – 13:00) and afternoons (13:00 – 16:30).

For more information on becoming a working member, please contact the Volunteer Liaison Team on 07585 198455 or at volunteers@elrpsltd.org.uk.
