Bury Transport Museum has recently undergone a major transformation and is was recently home to the iconic steam locomotive 60009 'Union of South Africa' a London and North Eastern Railway A4 class pacific, a sister to 'Mallard' which still holds the world record for a steam locomotive of 126 miles per hour. No 9, as she is affectionately, known was built in 1937 and carries a Springbok plaque on the side, a gift from a South African Newspaper. Withdrawn from service by British Railways in 1966, she has been under the stewardship of a single owner ever since. Following recent retirement from mainline running you can now experience getting up close to a life-sized express steam engine to really appreciate the size and power of a locomotive built at the zenith of steam.

The Museum is also packed with historical vehicles of every size and shape including a horse-drawn tram which once was a chip shop. 'Hilda', the steam roller who almost met a sticky end. The Museum hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year and also hosts drop-in craft workshops and special events during school holidays. Special visits are arranged for schools.
